I needed to just complete 9 stays between April and July 31st. This was a great time to do a challenge for me, because as kids get to spring break in late April and out of school, they love hotel stays. We had no big trips planned but some one and two-night stays would help. For this challenge a stay constitutes any length so If I stayed two nights at the same hotel, it was only 1 stay. Therefore, twice I switched hotels on back to back days which was less hectic then one might think. With the Marriott app, I requested late check out and then on check in for next hotel requested early check in so arrival time would overlap, thus meaning no in between time.
Here’s my original post when I started this.

Now, back to my challenge and why.
Hotel Status can be valuable, especially if you have kids or just want to enjoy a larger room via upgrades. Not to mention free breakfast, concierge club level, and more. I have actually started to see some upgrades even with my gold status finally, so I have high hopes for Platinum status. I will have the status essentially for 18 months.
First off, I had several stays already planned for the spring and summer. I knew I could lock up a couple stays for around $100 as well locally if I fell short and needed a couple stays. Spring can be one of the times I travel the most as well so 9 stays seemed to be a doable task. To give you an idea of why one might actually end up buying a couple hotel stays just to complete this and get status, here is my thinking.
I enjoy travel and getaways so hotels can be important. In addition, I will use my status to upgrade my status matches to other programs.
Here are the benefits I can get with platinum over the next 18 months.
- Complimentary enhanced internet: I already get this with gold
- Ultimate Reservation Guarantee
- 75%-point bonus:
- Priority late checkout (4pm):
- Welcome gift of points, breakfast offering or amenity:
- Room upgrades (including suites):
- Lounge access:
- Guaranteed room type
- Choice benefit (10 suite night awards or gift options):
- 48-hour guarantee:
- United Premier Silver status through RewardsPlus:
The biggest for me will be upgrades. While a lot of my stays do occur at lower tier properties in the big scheme, I am thinking of upgrades on larger trip or perhaps nicer resorts. I have trips like Hawaii and Mexico on my trip goals and perhaps even farther away when and if possible. Being able to book a garden or pool view and getting upgraded to a full ocean view could be huge in my opinion. When I take the kids places booking a regular room and potentially getting upgraded to a larger room or suite will be nice. Sometimes the difference is easily anywhere between $25-$100 more per night.
In addition, the point bonus alone will earn me enough for another free night based on my stay averages. I have also been using the late check out recently which can come in handy for being able to book a later flight.
In addition, here is a break down of the points I earned during all this. I also signed up for the seasonal Marriot Mega bonus. I also earn bobus points for some social media interaction at times or some small amounts for staying at a new brand.
15,186 on 9 stays
6,579 on the Marriott Visa points
6,825 on various bonuses via mega bonus
28,590 points total or enough for a free night at a category 5 or almost enough for a category 6 stay.
I plan on trying to keep track of my nights and benefits achieved using platinum status. You only need to wait 18 months to hear the grand total for that.
