I quickly checked out the power of Google, but didn't find much. Even the Chamber of Commerce didn't have any, "Things to Do" information. I was able to stumble upon some information on the web, plus got some info from one of my co workers.A little more time would have allowed me to rigorously research as I do so well and too much sometimes.
So off we went. I made a stop and picked up some Subway which we ate while waiting for the ferry. You have three options on how to get to Vashon which is nice. You can get there from Tacoma(Pt. Defiance), Southworth(Port Orchard), or Fauntleroy (West Seattle). We took the Port Orchard route. I always found ferry rides fun, but must have missed inflation over the last twenty years cause I was a bit sticker shocked at $25 for car, driver, and a passenger(child is free). Keep in mind this is a twenty minute ride, but does include the return trip.
After getting off the ferry for some reason I expected to see a visitors center or something, but nothing. I was winging it and headed south. I knew what I was looking for as our first step. I will say, they have some decent signage at the stop and roads. I eventually found our destination as we were going to Point Robinson to see the beach and lighthouse area. You could walk down a road or hike down a trail. We took the trail and after a short 5 -10 minutes we were there. It was really nice and not very crowded considering it was a sunny Sunday. You can go up in the lighthouse and check out some of the history. There is an active Coast Guard weather beacon/station there which is fenced in and unmanned. There are also two lighthouse quarters available for rent (CLICK HERE). The beach area is always fun for kids and was glad we made it down. There are picnic tables and one area even had a BBQ stand.
We headed out after about an hour to find a snack and coffee. There are a couple little burger places, a coffee shop (which looked closed today?).
I think weekends are the big draw here so probably even more sparse on weekdays, but probably less things are open. I did read Vashon has several other parks including a forest park with trails in the center of the island. The little one got fussy so we made our way for the ferry.
Overall we spent about 3 hours here and would like to go again after more research. I am sure there is a lot to do here with some research. For lodging option it appears that it is all B&B's. It also looks like some may not have survived the recession, but still should have plenty to choose from if you decide to stay the night.
