Is it possible to go to a baseball game over 700 miles away to get an airline voucher and still come out ahead? For those that know me, I would be inclined to fly anywhere for one day and go to a sporting event just for the adventure alone, so this isn’t a totally crazy idea, especially for me.
I haven’t seen this before but the San Francisco Giants are actually running two of these promos. One this week for Virgin America and one in September for Alaska Airlines. Essentially you are getting 50 % off of two tickets booked together on same itinerary.
First, I tried to see how cheap I can get to San Francisco which was to use Southwest points or book cash. I used 10,822 points for a round trip into Oakland. If my calculations are correct those points value at $162.33. The flights would have actually cost just over $200 cash so I come out ahead there. Keep in mind I am thinking long term on how those vouchers might be able to save anywhere from $100 to $500 per voucher. If you have a family of four, book two separate itineraries and save for all of you.
Next, I need to see if this voucher would actually be useful to me? Well, we have been thinking about a couple trips in the next year and both may include burning points so the thought of buying a cash ticket isn’t at the top of my list, but if I could make it worth it I might be inclined. I could also give those away to some of my followers and those that don’t have the luxury of having points to burn.
I decide to just see how restricted the vouchers are and as expected they carry some very tight restrictions.
I posted them in at the bottom of the article for your reference.
For us with kids in school it becomes almost impossible, almost. Blackout dates during the thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and what appears to be valentine’s week and or mid-winter break for some schools. I would be limited to using them for one of my sports trips, maybe a trip to Vegas, or for my family mid-winter break in February. We would have to wait to leave until Tuesday and then come back Sunday or miss a day or two of school. For those without kids this is a great option for any kind of getaway from a quick weekend adventure to a full-length vacation.
Finally, here are some of the savings. Keep in mind you won’t have the voucher until September 17th assuming you went to that game. The biggest catch is you need to book by September 20th! Yes, you have just 3 days to make a booking decision. Remember you are still paying taxes so just saving the base fare.
These are based on current pricing and are estimates:
- SEA-HNL (Honolulu) In January/February:
- Save $729, paying $800 total for two

- Plenty of these options to several islands
- Save $266, paying $499 for two people
