When we decided to venture off to Oregon for a couple nights, we knew we had to follow up on a commitment to visit wine country.
We had said it before and finally followed up on it. Although it was just a quick one night before heading off to Portland, we dicovered a wonderful charming area that has more wineries than I have ever seen in one area.
Just a short drive outside of Portland, Oregon as you head west on 99, you start to see the signs for wineries and they are everywhere. We were heading to McMinnville Oregon which was just about a little over an hour outside of Portland. You will travel through Newberg and Dundee, which are also filled with wineries. Many of these wineries have limited hours in the winter but most are open from 11-5. Check out some links below for great resources.
Due to the short trip, we only stopped at one winery which was Duck Pond. Staff was friendly and the tastings were low cost. We enjoyed their shop which also featured a small menu of great food items to have with your wine.
If you have never done a visit to a winery or tasting room basically they charge you either per taste or per flight, which is a sampling of a few wines. This can range anywhere between $2 and $8 on avg. If you end up buying wine, they will waive the tasting fees. A great chance to taste wine and purchase future gifts, because wine always makes a great gift, especially at Christmas time.
Lots of great bistros and coffee shops along this route as well. Lodging options vary from main stay small hotels to B&B's , or you can go vintage like us as we tried one of the McMenamins properties. This beer mecca company not only has a tone of pubs in Oregon, but old vintage rustic hotels. Many are dorm style with bathrooms down the hall and rates beginning at around $60 a night. We landed a King room, with a private bathroom for $110. You wont find TV's in these hotels, but you may find some weird art on the walls, and stories of ghosts that may wander the halls. The hotel featured multiple drinking options with a pub, cellar bar , and a rooftop bar which provides views of wine country. Our stay at Hotel Oregon in McMinnville was nice and this type of hotel is good for one night, but not sure I could have done two. And we even found out that McMinnville has a history with UFO's!
Check out Oregon Wine Country!
Had a great stay in Oregon this week.
The 2nd night we stayed in Portland at The Benson Hotel, which is part of the Coast Hotels Brand. This hotel is on the registry of historical buildings and is a vintage hotel that will take you back in time.
Many times these package deals that the hotels offer don't add up to value, but in this case, I scored!
I did all my usual research and at one point found a hotel on Hotwire for about $105. I actually thought if I took this, it might be the Benson, but then I stumbled upon their website while researching. and I knew with the Hotwire price, I would still have to pay for parking and breakfast.
Their "Shoppers Package" offered rooms starting at $179...(we took a King room for $189). It included Valet parking ($31), included breafast buffet for two ($30), a Macys gift card($50), a gift certificate for the hotel ($25), and some other nice perks like 10% off at Macys, cookies, and a shoppers tote ($10). So even if I dont count the value of tote and small stuff, I was getting $136 back in credits and gifts..and what I describe as very useable credits. This important in today deal world..dont count the credits unless you can and will use them!
So if I just booked the king room I could have gotten it for about $159. I would paid for parking($31), had breakfast ($30), maybe not the same one, but the hotel breakfast was one of the best I have seen! I probably at some point would have eaten or had drinks in the hotel ($25) so that alone without any hotel taxes would have been over $245. My hotel bill was $201, plus I still had the Maacys gift card and tote, and other stuff.
Even taking the hotewire route, I would have been over $190.
Then add in that we did most of our Christmas Shopping tax free of course, makes this a great trip!
PS: Don't forget to visit the abundance of food carts in Portland!
Living Social Escapes:
Reno, NV for $59 per night with extras- I like Reno, even though the economy and the local casinos probably have hurt Reno more than any of the gambling towns. If you want to go, this is a good deal.
Portland, OR for $99 with extras- Great deal!! I have stayed here and this place is a nice hotel. Snag this deal now. You get a room, parking, and breakfast..you can't beat that deal.
Casino stay with spa treatment for $99- For us locals up here near Tacoma/Seattle or anyone in Pacific NW, this is a great deal. You get the stay, plus a spa treatment for $99

Many time I just post deals I see to the Facebook page since its quick and easy. But I figured I would give a run down of some of the better deals I see. Remember in all these, it's always important to do research. As I always state, check the resort directly vs package deals, and also check it out on Trip advisor to make sure its worth it. Many times I see resorts on here and lets face it...they are giving the great deal for a reason. Usually that means they have had poor reviews and trying to get folks back, or it could just be a slow season.
Napa Valley, CA: for $169 per night. Includes wine tasting and bowling for two- This seems to be a good deal. All the research I just did for our trip shows that this is an expensive area. Usually a nice place thats a resort or has some of the great romantic touches is gonna run 200-400 per night (no joke).
Long Beach, Wa: For as low as $64 for one night. The reviews are hit and miss, but out of the two deals for Long beach, this one is the better of the two.
Cancun, Mexico for as low as $164 for 2 adults, and kids under 12: For an all inclusive this is a great deal. If you're looking for value this is it. On top of that, the recent reviews on Trip Advisor are pretty good. With an all inclusive go into it not expecting luxury. Expect a good stay with decent food and drinks thats all inluded and you wont be dissapointed.
