Airport parking is always a topic on a lot of traveler’s minds. With any trip, always comes that question of: Do I take a shuttle or do
we drive? Many don’t want to ask for a ride because then you need a ride back so a shuttle or parking near the airport are the alternatives. This is also a widely debated topic among travelers and I am sure you will get many different opinions. So here’s a breakdown of some airport options and my two cents on the option. I have used my home airport of Sea-Tac (SEA) as an example. And I used an upcoming trip for price comparisons. The trip is a Wednesday morning departure with late Sat night arrival.
1. Do what you are comfortable with both in terms of convenience and price.
A. You have to factor in the price and do some quick research to compare prices
B. You have 3 basic options (1. Ask for a ride. 2. Take a shuttle or limo service. 3. Park near airport)
C. Always know what prices you are comparing! Some lots charge by calendar day, some by the 24 hour clock.
D.Sometimes booking a different flight may save you money, but I have never booked based on parking rates.
2. Parking at/near the airport
A. Parking actually at the airport terminal will probably cost more (Sea-Tac for $35 per day)
B. But using a service such as the many near the airport offers convenience, lower rates, and a free shuttle ride
C. The basic places have basic lots, with basic services, most of the time self-park, although some offer valet too ($7.95 )
D. The more common (higher end) lots usually have valet service, covered parking in garages, some having multiple services on site ($12.95 -$16.95 per day)
E. All rates do not include taxes and fees. Some sites will quote you a total, many don't
F. Always go on their website and print off web coupon! Or see web rates!
3. Shuttle service/Car service
A. You have a couple options here. A shuttle (such as shuttle express or Capital Airporter, etc)($29 per person each way)
B. Or you can go with a car service which (town car about $60 each way, limo about $70-90)
C. As you can see a private town car is about the same as a shared van service!
D. For the limo service you really need to look online, compare, and usually call around. Some of the
sites don’t clearly list prices and who knows maybe you can get a deal!
I usually just park near the airport. I have done all of the above though. I have had good experiences with both shuttle express and Capital Airporter. For those special trips, I have gotten a limo before as well which is truly a great experience. For parking at the airport, I usually use one of the valet garages, because I prefer that and feel better about leaving my car. The one time I used a basic lot, I had no issues. It did take a little longer for the shuttle and to get my car, but other than that it was fine.
Some recommendations for all categories:
And remember sometimes taxes add about $6-10 to the rate so do the math and calculate! Some sites show you total, some don’t. Always call if you have questions!
